Cegel
Established in 1972, the Genival Londres Study and Research Centre (Cegel) is a public utility institution recognized as such by the Federal Government (Ministry of Justice) since 1987. It was created as a product of the conviction that teaching and research are the ideal trigger to leverage the practice of medicine. It is through Cegel that Clínica São Vicente cultivates what is considered most important: Human thought.
The proposal to conduct clinical research in hospitals in Brazil is innovative and promising. This context includes rare examples and Clínica São Vicente is a pioneer in Rio de Janeiro regarding private institutions.
Cegel was conceived in a meeting with the physicians at Clínica São Vicente to discuss the scientific activities and clinical cases. The idealizer, Dr. Genival Londres, already forecasted the requirement of scientific research in medicine. Today, in the century of speed and information, this tool has become fundamental for an institution such as Clínica São Vicente, that more then rendering medical services to patients, it targets having up-to-date professional staff, with wide analysis capability, stimulated to contribute to advancing medicine.
Research Centre
In July 2000, Clínica São Vicente developed the Clinical Research Centre, with the intention of coordinating and executing projects developed by Cegel. The objective was to optimize the different types of diagnosis and treatment, stimulating scientific development and disseminating knowledge.
In 2002, the Ethics and Research Committee (CEP-CEGEL) was created in order to evaluate the studies in Clínica São Vicente conducted on humans. The CEPs are an interdisciplinary boards created to defend the interests of the researchers and to guarantee the observance of ethical principles when conducting activities.
The Research Centre currently develops research in many clinical areas and maintains partnerships with other national and international institutions. The possibility of generating scientific knowledge represents a differential at Clínica São Vicente, and the result can be disseminated through the growing participation of members of the clinic in congresses and their publications in scientific journals.
Currently, the production of knowledge includes nearly all the areas of medicine and health. In Clínica São Vicente, a great number of professionals are involved in specialization programs, applied research, courses and scientific activities focused on the well-being of humans.

Individual research projects also find at Cegel the source of stimulus for continued education of the professionals, and consequently their personal accomplishment.
Continued education and training
The activities of Cegel include the organization of regular courses and events, with the objective of triggering debate and promoting the integration among professionals of different areas, exchanging information and knowledge. It is dynamic work prompting congresses, lectures, symposiums and conferences, apart from the weekly study groups.
The Library, directly linked to Cegel, offers crucial support in acquiring research material for professional in any institution, to participate in medical congresses in Brazil and abroad, to publish scientific papers and to teach classes.
The Study Centre is also the access point for the professionals who which to enrich their knowledge and for students at completing their education, who are selected for courses and internships at Clínica São Vicente.
